Introduction to Kundalini as Consciousness

   Kundalini as Consciousness is a broad term that covers many of the broader social and philosophical modalities that the kundalini dominates. All consciousness, living beings and their conditions, even including the living and experiencing we all do, is believe it or not, controlled by the agency of the Kundalini. How exactly this is will be hopefully explained to the reader’s satisfaction. However, what we are really dealing with here is all of the aspects of our biological reality and how this reality is viewed and experienced by ourselves, both in enlightened and unenlightened states of consciousness, and in order to actually have a complete and accurate perception of this one must awaken the Kundalini their selves, and allow Her to completely saturate and descend down from Sahasrara Cakra, further saturating ones being with Her Consciousness. For true Kundalini enlightenment is the experience of Her actual being as the Devi, the Divine Mother. She as an intact entity is the source of your personal ego self consciousness, and is actually the total representative of God (Siva) and His Consciousness in Sahasrara cakra, the source of your Being. Hence, Her living Self is the totality of Divine Self Being you aspire to be and live.

What is the Connection?

 

Kundalini

   Consciousness, what is it? Is it the result of our neurotransmitter processes that create our brain activity? Is our consciousness, our personal self, merely a symptom of our brain activity? As such, does our personal consciousness survive death, when the physical brain dies?

   Does our consciousness have a spiritual basis? Is it the result of a soul or spirit that underscores our physical neurological processes?

   How has this “consciousness” become us? Are we just born with it? If this consciousness is an attribute of God, as some assert, why aren’t we divine, why don’t we exhibit higher or divine attributes of thinking and behavior, instead of the morose and brutal lives many humans find enjoyable as life?

   Is there an absolute God, who is cosmic in scope and absolute in depth? Is he the basis of life, and even more, the basis of the consciousness within that life? Why are we so unaware of the reality of God, either within or without ourselves? Is faith as thought the only way we can approach God? If God is eternal, and is the basis for our lives, are we eternal as well? Just what is our connection, our actual link, to God?

   The eastern tenets of Tantra, Vedanta, and Yoga put forth the assertion that our experience of consciousness has as its basis a divine source, a divine substratum. This consciousness substratum forms the basis of reality, biological and inert, underlying reality as well as inhabiting the biological forms it evolves as. Given names like Brahma, Siva, etc, this divine cosmic substratum is essentially what we call God. Hence, God as defined by these eastern mystic circles is the cosmic consciousness of the universe, and as we are inhabitants of this universe, it goes without saying that this God would also be the source of the consciousness within us as well. The stance that God as the Kundalini is the basis for this living consciousness within us, as well as being the absolute source of our existence, forms the core thesis of this work. This theme will resurface time and again as we move through this work.

The Human Experience of Life

What is it? Part 1

 

   Think of yourself as you read these words. A few minutes before you may have been speaking to your wife, child or friend, watching TV, or maybe looking at something on the Internet, petting your dog or cat. All around us people conduct their lives every day, working, going to school, etc. Whatever is the activity, the experience of life, being an embodied being, sensing through the senses as a living consciousness is what is undergone, is what is being experienced as life and is considered normal living.

   As we live out these desires, we assume that we will live long enough to do so. Even within our own bodies, our physical processes are largely unknown to us. We can feel our heartbeat, air going in and out of our lungs and so forth. Pain in a certain part of our body can tell us that something may be wrong, but our autonomic processes, our central nervous system mechanisms, go on daily without our least awareness or control. We have to monitor our health processes as we age, not knowing whether or not a disease could be growing within us such as cancer or other insidious diseases.

   For instance, to compound the situation, chronic diseases that gradually occur over time, can develop without symptoms. One day you go to the doctor for your annual health check up and bingo - test results come back that you are developing diabetes, have cancer or whatever. So the point is that dramatic changes in your very health makeup can be ongoing, without you knowing a single thing about it. And you don’t have to be old for this to occur - it happens every day to millions of people; the younger a person is, typically the least attention is given to health concerns. But basically all people if at the current moment they have no immediate pain or an obvious looming health situation such as a stroke or heart attack, attempt to ignore the reality or possibility of such an event ever happening, and this impulse is natural however naïve.

   The typical experience of living is basically fraught with a state of mind involving taking a lot for granted - taking for granted that our heart will beat as required, our internal neurological and metabolic processes will continue on - keeping us alive, as our “real interests”, pleasures of varying kinds, sex, food, sports, striving for monetary possessions, etc., occupy our second to second attention.

   We live as bodily manifested beings, having been born, and growing up from our younger years up until we are of legal age and can navigate society and maybe the world, living and attempting to fulfill our desires; desires we consider that we are the originator of and at the helm of experiencing. Additionally, the above mentioned “bodily manifestation” is a physical unit or “machine”, if you will, that one finds themselves as being or within, that is operating under processes that although we experience the result of their operation as our experience of existence, we are largely unaware of the source, nature, or intricacy of their biological function. This body is considered our self, “our body”, and despite what we might not want to accept, what systems are driving “our body” are not only out of our direction or control, but are outside of our subjective or internal awareness. Simply put, we as living beings have as our physical and mental selves ongoing biological processes that work to produce our immediate physical life, that we as the possessor of those bodies or life have no clue or any real awareness of any of these intricate, complicated and essential biological and neurological functions, aside from feeling our own breathing or feelings our own heart beat. Our creation of immediate self has stemmed from birth, and aside from physical maintenance that affects our skeletal and biological growth, much of makes up our functioning mechanisms we have no awareness of or control over. The same is true with our spiritual mechanisms, which we will now expound upon.

   This brings us to a very important point - as with the physical and neurological processes of the body operating unawares, giving you life at many different levels, so are there even more dynamic spiritual mechanisms that function undetected and are also giving you life, consciousness and personality from the spiritual platform. Hence, there are many different spiritual processes and mechanisms that are currently on going within us as we live and move through time and space, which as the eternal basis for our existence, we are nevertheless totally unaware of.

   These spiritual agencies or structures serve as the mechanisms of experience - they function to allow us to sense, emote, seemingly evaluating reality, when they really are creating an illusion of the finite self and ego and its experience of living as an embodied person. The Kundalini with its theatre of operation as the cakras and their subsidiary components is the governing agency here. So the emphasis is that although one may not be experiencing an awareness of the Kundalini, She in fact exists in you and is very real, and is shaping your living at every level.

 

What is it? Part 2 - Karma

Understanding Karma

   “In India, the automatic functions of mind are called Karma. This refers to the mental impressions that make up ones personality.”[1] This statement comes directly from Swami Satyananda in His encyclopedic yogic work, “Yoga and Kriya”. He continues, “these mental impressions either oppose or reinforce, believe or disbelieve, the daily flow of concepts that flood one’s mind. Karma is in the mind, it indicates entanglement, attachment, with the external phenomenon of the world around us, and the subconscious data of the mind that the person possesses, hence an ongoing co-reaction with ones perspective of physical reality that is perpetually reciprocal”.

   Technically, Karma simply means action, and one’s life enfoldment is your karma that you live out. As more actions are lived, both long and short term, immediate and long term results come from these actions - this is the macro effect of the “what goes around comes around” aspect of karma, which of course breaks down to include individual incidences of daily life. However, it also serves to be the mis-representation for this word, because karma is every thought you have, every desire you have, which bind you to other similar thoughts or desires, both in the immediate future as well as down the road in time.

   Compulsions and drives possess us, leading us into negative or bad circumstances that endanger our health. We see and move through behaviors that we know are killing ourselves or making ourselves sick, yet we can’t stop doing these things despite our awareness or understanding of the issue. These compulsions are karmas, a word that has been mythologized and not understood. Your karma is the binding flow of thoughts that you live, and your reaction to them that produces more subsequent thoughts and desires. So karma is the actionable or reactionable flow of your living, that although seems to be hinged on a will that you can navigate, is actually a controlling pattern of behavior that cannot be escaped to any real degree by other actions or thoughts. The only way to escape the karma of your self is to induce the agency that is creating it, the Kundalini, to awaken and withdraw these desires that the ego both wants to live and doesn’t want but nevertheless has to experience.

   Karma has many different forms that serve to interact over time creating more karmas. Here, we only want to be concerned with the base definition of karma, and how one’s life overall is very much a continuation of thoughts, actions, and events that constitute a continuity, which is basically one big linking of actions and reactions that are you - your karma. So, you are your karma. To see karma as the “what goes around comes around” aspect that is known as karma - is a very limited view; instead karma, your karma, is one continual flow of life and thought.

   And just as your experience of life biologically is manifested by a plethora of mechanisms within your body that you have no awareness of, the before said spiritual mechanisms of the Kundalini are there as well. These mechanisms of the cakra/nadi/pranic paradigm that are what I call the operational theatre of the Kundalini, are not only serving to drive and maintain your physical processes of living, but are also completely responsible for your thinking, wanting, doing, and also suffering, that you live out as karma. The Kundalini is therefore the complete basis for the appearance of your birth, your subsequent growth and life, including every facet of your personality.

   This is critical to understand. Why? Because just as the Kundalini creates your thinking, your life’s processes and therefore your karma; She is inherently responsible for removing it. She is therefore your direct link to the divine processes i.e. God, that are currently manifesting you, and the direct link by which to return to them.

Enter Kundalini

   Kundalini technically means to coil, coalesce, or condense. What She coils or condenses is consciousness, Absolute Consciousness. This is my own experienced definition. Although She is acclaimed for the ability when aroused, to deliver the yoga or tantra practitioner’s mind to the experience of divine awareness, this is essentially a secondary potentiality. Her primary function is the initial reduction of said practitioner’s consciousness, from Siva’s actual consciousness of Caitanyatma, something that was initiated in the depths of primordial antiquity, before biological evolution ever reached humanness. This stance is crucial to grasp in order for the integral role Kundalini plays in the creation of our consciousness to be understood.

   What we experience as reality is contingent upon our sensing it- what is our experiential consciousness. As already mentioned, this experience is taken for granted. We take for granted that what we experience is what is real, or reality, or what is actually the basis for a situation, physically anyway. But what if what we experience is the product of a higher transcendental agency, an agency that is super spiritual and is literally creating the reality we seem to be sensing? What if God, instead of creating reality at a given point in time, is creating reality and time spontaneously from second to second by creating the consciousness, our consciousness, which is experiencing that reality? This is exactly what God as the divine mechanism of the Kundalini is doing.

The Kundalini As The Divine Creatrix - How God Creates

   I have defined the Kundalini as a condensing, coiling mechanism, and of equally great significance She has expansive or expanding characteristics as well, that function opposite of Her condensing or coalescing traits. This is highly significant. I arrive at this definition of the Kundalini largely from the experience of Her extreme consciousness producing activities within myself, combined with how the word is defined and explained by its Sanskrit phonetics. This perspective of these characteristics of the Kundalini is integral to understanding the Kundalini’s divine role as a direct instrument of God’s manifestation of not only our living reality, but the greater macro cosmic structure as well. These factors form the major thrust of this document, and will be expounded on in greater emphasis and detail as we move through the text.

   The immanent absolute field of Caitanyatma Siva or Brahma exists as an omnipresent omniscient static plane that is the substrate of the universe we see and move through. When He wishes to create as to expand out into becoming other levels of existence, He uses the Maha Kundalini Devi. The Kundalini is the descent of the Devi via the bindu medium She creates in the womb of the Hiranyagarbha fabric, technically the causal plane. She is the aspect of God that creates through Her causal potentiation. Our Sahasrara Cakra is one such bindu, and Kundalini descent is initiated from this point. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves here.

   Notice the word causal- it implies just as it defines- it causes to be - causes to be by its very presence. In essence when something is causal in the absolute sense it creates by its own will and presence. This can pertain to a macro phenomenon such as a cosmic field, or it can pertain to an individual entity such as the Deity. Such a causal modality has an in given divine organizational capacity within its energies. Kundalini is such an agency, using Her expansive and contracting causal potentiation to manifest various Bindu - expanded/contracted created field manifestations. -(bindu means point, a point of expansion or contraction, much more on bindu later).

   The Kundalini is a multi faceted entity. It not only spirals out of a given bindu structure as a snake like agency, uncoiling to create the continuum fields it manifests, but it also contracts to re-form another Bindu, or other bindus. This is why Kundalini is thought of and referred to as a snake type energy in yogic and tantric mythology, because it behaves very similar to how a snake behaves, coiling and uncoiling, and this energy behavior can be experienced within oneself, hence it’s scriptural documentation. But indeed, the Kundalini is no snake, and instead this energy is an energy of divine consciousness; She is literally alive with the awareness of the divine absolute, as it both reduces that consciousness down to the experience of our minds, and subsequently can return that finite mind consciousness back to its source of the absolute. To experience the Kundalini in Her expansive - awakened state is the goal of yoga, and the goal of life.

   In summary, the Kundalini is a living divine organizational energy of consciousness that is divinely aware of itself. She is literally the descent of the Devi, the female aspect of Absolute God into this world, as the divine Genetrix of reality.

One Step Further - The Real Meaning of Life

   So with all of this said, is there a real or ultimate purpose of life? Absolutely. It is known as Vimarsa. What is Vimarsa? Vimarsa is a Sanskrit term that means "divine touching". The prefix "Vi" means superior or divine and "marsa" means touching or experiencing.

Vimarsa is unique to a special sect of Kashmir Shaivism called Pratyabhijna. That in and of itself is of no particular significance, but the term Vimarsa is because it is so perfectly suited to what God is doing with and through us. Essentially God is experiencing this world or plane, through the lives, loves and travails of all living beings, not just we humans but all life.

   Why would God want or need to sense through our lives, when He is supposedly full and complete and we are so lacking or primitive in so many ways? In alot of ways, we have to go back to the word "meaning" in the beginning of this segment, because what is meaning to us is not the same with Absolute God. The difference between the two "meanings" is 180 degrees between God and us. To us meaning implies success or fulfillment which is really karma, and gives us pleasure, security, or stature. To a very large extent, the meaning behind God's thrust as the Kundalini into the throlls of existence has a meaning akin to a solar flare or another similar cosmic eruption, that flares or throbs His Absolute Consciousness as Caitanyatma as a thrust of divine sound (Shabda Brahmin Kundalini) into the causal then physical planes that initiates spiritual evolution. Absolute God is pure intent and being, and so is His inherent thrust intrinsic within us. Several agencies exist within this overall creation matrix that serve to drive and direct this evolution, within and through the primitiveness that life as God as the Divine Mother Kali (Kundalini) must evolve as and evolve through as well. The primary agency that serves as this directress are the three gunas: Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas.

   Sattva is divine goodness, Rajas is divine desire, and Tamas is divine darkness. These three divine undercurrents of causation are inherent in the latent Kundalini within us and direct our karma/thinking directives and ultimately and hopefully a life that one day seeks trancendence. All of this is intrinsic to our living experience and how Vimarsa which is functioning from Sahasrara down through the cakras meets, navigates, and ultimately evaluates our thinking and living continuum through the vector of our ego.

   This is why everything we do is being done to God as our selves, and everything done to all other beings is being done to God as well. All is God and to escape the obvious karma here this the ego vector is removed through yogic/Kundalini transcendence and a mind of pure Sattva is attained and lived. This is the real meaning and purpose of life, to make the "vimarsa" God experiences a pure experience unto His/Herself.
